Fruitport Township Board Negotiation Committee

The Fruitport Township Board of Trustees voted Monday to form a negotiation committee to meet with the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians when more details of a proposed casino are available.

After two hours of heated discussion, the Fruitport Township board voted 4-4 to grant the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians its support for a proposed casino at the former Great Lakes Downs property.

Tribal leaders have said the proposed Fruitport casino would be twice the size of the Manistee casino. The 23,000-square-foot Little River Casino offers 28 table games, 1,575 slots, a poker room, three restaurants and a 292-room luxury hotel.

The Fruitport casino would create 800 to 1,000 jobs, tribal officials have said.

Magna sells Great Lakes Downs

Magna Entertainment Corp. sold the 85 acre property that was used as Great Lakes Downs racetrack to the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians for $5 million dollars.
